Instructions

Here are the steps to make Salisbury Steaks with Mushroom Gravy:

For Salisbury Steaks:

  1. Grate the onion using a box grater over a bowl containing breadcrumbs. Mix the grated onion with the breadcrumbs and let it soak for a few minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the grated onion and breadcrumb mixture with the remaining Salisbury Steak ingredients. Use your hands to mix until everything is just combined. Mix well for a couple of minutes until the mixture becomes somewhat “pasty” to ensure the patties hold together.
  3. Divide the mixture into 5 portions and shape them into oval patties, each about 3/4 inch (1 2/3 cm) thick.

For Cooking and Gravy:

  1. Heat oil in a skillet over high heat. Add the Salisbury steaks and cook for about 1 minute on each side, or until browned. The steaks will still be raw inside at this point. Remove them from the skillet onto a plate.
  2. If the skillet looks dry, add a touch more oil. Add the chopped onion and garlic and cook for 2 minutes until the onions become slightly translucent.
  3. Add the mushrooms to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes until they turn golden.
  4. Reduce the heat to medium. Add the butter. Once melted, add the flour and cook for 30 seconds while stirring constantly.
  5. Gradually add the beef broth to the skillet, stirring as you go. Once mostly lump-free, whisk in the remaining Gravy ingredients.
  6. Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet along with any juices on the plate. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens, stirring occasionally around the steaks. If the gravy thickens too quickly, add more water.
  7. Taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Remove the Salisbury steaks onto a plate and serve them topped with the mushroom gravy. Serving them over mashed potatoes is ideal! If desired, sprinkle with a bit of parsley for garnish.

Enjoy your homemade Salisbury Steaks with Mushroom Gravy!
