Homemade Iced Matcha Latte
You’re in for a genuine lovely treat if, like me, you enjoy a decent iced matcha latte. This recipe uses my favorite, time-tested technique for making the greatest handmade iced matcha latte. I’m not beyond occasionally picking one up from my neighborhood coffee dealer. But after doing a ton of research and testing, I came up with a homemade formula that saves you the money on coffee shop costs.
This is dedicated to all of my matcha enthusiasts and novices alike! I have all the information you need about matcha, including a ton of useful tips and illustrated instructions to aid you along the way. Whether you’ve never tried a matcha latté before or you already make them at home, welcome!
Ingredient Spotlight: Matcha!
Describe matcha. To begin with, matcha is a fine green tea powder made from pulverized green tea leaves that are cultivated in shadow. It is also a tea with Japanese roots, having historically been very important to Japanese tea rituals. Matcha powder generally has a vivid green hue and tastes somewhat bitter, grassy, and vegetal with a burst of mellow umami. It’s a widely consumed type of green tea in Japan and worldwide.
What You’ll Need For An Iced Matcha Latte
- The primary and most important component is matcha powder! You can find matcha powder online, in stores, and occasionally in your neighborhood coffee shops. But not all matcha is regarded as “high-quality” matcha, and for that reason, I strongly advise against it. We’ll discuss this topic in greater detail below.
- Water: The matcha blooms when it is exposed to a small amount of hot water.
- Ice: You know, since we’re going to be creating an iced matcha latte.
- Milk: Feel free to use whichever type of milk you prefer—I’m a huge lover of oat milk!
- Pure matcha can taste fairly harsh and earthy, so a small addition of maple syrup or sugar adds some sweetness to the drink. I suggested using honey, agave, maple syrup, or any other syrups or flavors made with coffee that you like (caramel, vanilla, etc.). Sweeteners are completely voluntary!
How To Make A Homemade Iced Matcha Latte
- Sift matcha into a small bowl. Sifting the matcha first allows for any clumps within your batch of matcha to be broken up for the smoothest texture.
- Then add the hot water into the bowl with the matcha.
- Use a bamboo whisk to vigorously whisk the mixture together until the matcha develops a nice foamy top.
- Add a handful of ice into a glass and fill with milk of choice, and add a splash of maple syrup or sweetener, to taste- optional. Then pour the matcha mixture directly on top. Stir the iced matcha latte with a straw to fully combine. Sip away and enjoy your life!
My Favorite, Matcha-Making Items
- Matcha bowl: I have a little matcha bowl that I like. It’s the one with the small pouring spout that you see in the pictures. However, a dedicated “matcha bowl” is not required; a tiny, normal dish would do just fine.
- A tiny sieve called a fine mesh strainer is used to separate the matcha powder.
- Bamboo matcha ladle: This Japanese matcha scoop is meant to be used for both pushing matcha through the sifter and serving/measuring the ideal amount of matcha (as seen).
- Bamboo matcha whisk: Often called a chasen, this kind of implement is a traditional Japanese matcha stirrer crafted from natural bamboo. The ideal tool for whisking matcha and water together until frothy is a matcha whisk.
- Sphere ice: The ice used in lattes is, to me, an experience unto itself, hehe. I frequently utilize the spherical ice mold that I own. I’m frequently questioned about it when I make beverages since it makes little spheres of ice.

Let’s Talk About Matcha Powder & Sourcing
You guys, matcha powder quality is really crucial. Have you ever ordered a matcha latte at a coffee shop and thought the flavor wasn’t quite right or the color was a little off? That’s probably because to the poor quality of the matcha. You may come across phrases like “culinary grade” matcha and “ceremonial grade” matcha when discussing matcha. The Western world came to refer to matcha that has been utilized in Japanese tea rituals using the previous nomenclature. Additionally, you may use the latter, which is a lower grade of matcha, to flavor baked products and other culinary uses.
Direct, premium matcha grown in Japan is the best grade matcha available. All of Ippodo Tea’s matcha variations are regarded as premium, and their real matcha is my all-time favorite. They have several matcha variations for you to sample and are indeed the best. My second favorite comes from Matchaful, a supplier of Japanese matcha with only one origin.
The two most crucial characteristics of ceremonial matcha are its taste and color, which make it elite grade. For this reason, ceremonial grade, or premium matcha, is frequently more expensive than culinary grade matcha. While culinary grade matcha is bitter and has a duller green/brown hue, ceremonial grade matcha is bright and vivid green with rich flavor. Put “ceremonial grade” to use.
Is Matcha Good For You?
For many years, green tea has been lauded for its numerous health advantages. The high antioxidant content of matcha is one of its primary advantages. Additionally, matcha could improve metabolic and cognitive wellness. Because of the antioxidants, it is thought to assist in hormone regulation. Compared to coffee, which releases caffeine more quickly, matcha releases caffeine more steadily and steadily. Matcha does not cause an abrupt crash.
Because matcha naturally reduces stress, those who drink it may display an alert feeling of serenity and an improved mood. In light of these advantages, some people believe matcha to be healthier than coffee.
Tips + Tricks, Notes & FAQs
You could have more inquiries concerning this recipe for an iced matcha latte. Here are some additional details and useful information for you:
- Brilliant green matcha: Due to its high chlorophyll content when harvested, high-quality matcha should be vivid, brilliant, and vibrant green (even when poured over milk!). Poor grade matcha has a murky green color and a drab, pale appearance. I detest seeing an iced matcha latte that looks dejected 😭.
- Components of matcha: Your matcha should include just 100% genuine Japanese matcha or green tea, nothing else!
- Which type of milk tastes best for a latte? You may use cow’s milk, almond milk, oat milk, cashew milk, soy milk, macadamia milk, or even coconut milk! Just to point out, matcha’s subtle essence goes well with alternative milks because cow’s milk has a strong dairy taste.
- Milk to matcha ratio: The amount of milk used in lattes is entirely dependent on personal choice. I find that the amount of matcha specified in this recipe works best with one cup of milk. But you may cut the milk down to 3/4–1/2 cup if you’d rather have less milk or a stronger matcha taste in your iced latte.
- Matcha should always be kept in a cool, dark area since it is extremely sensitive to heat, sunlight, and humidity.
